Gut Ecology & Metabolic Modulation
As a fully qualified G.E.M.M. Clinician, I am properly trained to assess, prescribe and advise on the use of this innovative protocol to work with mother nature on improving your health, whatever your starting point.
The G.E.M.M. protocol is a unique system of health care designed to improve your gut and overall health by utilising your body’s own defence mechanisms and healing abilities. It utilises an inclusive diet together with effective natural therapeutics to encourage your body to heal itself.
Your digestive system and its underlying immune network are the starting point for addressing a whole range of common disorders. The cells of the Gut-Immune Network send thousands of biochemical messages throughout your body, regulating the function of many cells in other parts of your body. When your cells are functioning at their peak, your body can begin to repair itself, regardless of which health conditions you may have. The science of Nutrigenomics plays an important role in the programme’s success. Nutrigenomics is the science that investigates how certain food molecules act as signals that ‘talk to our genes’, promoting either health or disease, depending on what foods we eat.
After considering your health history and current health status, I will tailor your treatment programme, sequentially addressing all key aspects of cellular function. As you progress through the G.E.M.M. levels, you will find symptoms disappearing as your overall state of health improves. The culinary and lifestyle skills you will learn as a G.E.M.M. patient will enable you to maintain your new sense of wellbeing for the rest of your life.
Some commonly asked questions about G.E.M.M.
Why is G.E.M.M. different from other gut repair protocols?
GEMM relies largely on the ability of food molecules to mobilize the body’s own defences, beginning at the cells lining the gut. GEMM activates the capacity of these cells to maintain and regulate the environment within the digestive tract and body as a whole.
What qualifications do G.E.M.M. clinicians need to use this approach?
GEMM is a post graduate programme for clinicians qualified in Integrative Medicine, Naturopathy, Medicine or Nutrition Science and requires additional assessment and regular annual upskilling to maintain active accreditation.
Is G.E.M.M backed by science?
Yes! The G.E.M.M. Protocol was developed by Australian Nutritional Biochemist, Dr Christine Houghton PhD, who after several decades in clinical practice, realised that existing therapies for addressing gut health, metabolic and other chronic diseases were not effectively targeting the underlying causes of ill health. All aspects of the G.E.M.M. Protocol have their foundation in peer-reviewed scientific evidence.
Will I need to be on a specific ‘diet’?
G.E.M.M. promotes a Diet of Inclusion, not Diets of Exclusion. A few foods may need to be excluded initially when embarking on G.E.M.M but the ultimate aim of the G.E.M.M. Protocol is to encourage a diverse range of minimally-processed whole foods which are introduced sequentially as you progress through the programme. We will work together to ensure this meets your personal needs, likes and dislikes.
Will I get long-term results with G.E.M.M.?
When you understand how your lifestyle and food choices affect your genes, you are more empowered to choose the right options more often. Ultimately, you are in control of your long-term results. However, with such a diverse range of health promoting foods from which to choose and a genuine desire to stay well, it becomes remarkably easy to maintain the new lifestyle habits.
What health conditions respond to the G.E.M.M. approach?
Whilst G.E.M.M. initially addresses the function of the gut, it then works to improve the function of all bodily systems. The nutrigenomically-active ingredients in the formulations together with the underlying diet help to improve the function of all the body’s cells at a fundamental level.
Healthy cells mean a healthy body and the G.E.M.M. approach implements treatment at the cellular level, so ALL the cells of your body will benefit, impacting the treatment of most conditions.
How long will this programme take?
The length of the treatment phase of the G.E.M.M Protocol will vary from one person to another. It will be dependent upon a range of factors which include the nature and extent of your health issues, your genetic predisposition and how readily you can adopt the necessary lifestyle changes. I may be able to provide approximate timeframes based on the information you provide, together with my clinical experience in treating other patients with similar conditions.
As a guide, most patients will experience substantial improvement within 3 months; more complex and longstanding conditions may take longer. On the other hand, many patients feel beneficial changes in just a few weeks. As you see your symptoms disappearing, you will know that there are important cellular changes taking place.
Is G.E.M.M. a lifestyle approach?
The G.E.M.M Protocol is underpinned by the same principles Nature has used to sustain human
life on this planet for many thousands of years. With the benefit of modern Nutrition Science,
G.E.M.M has been developed to incorporate those diet and lifestyle habits which have the
most impact on human health.
As these factors are gradually introduced into each patient’s programme, specific nutraceutical
formulations are selected to hasten and support progress. As you move through the various
G.E.M.M. Levels, your clinician will guide you in establishing the dietary and lifestyle habits best
suited to the maintenance of your long-term health.
Will G.E.M.M. help to improve my immune function?
While targeting digestive health is the first step of the G.E.M.M. Protocol, the second step focuses on restoring the communication between the gut and its underlying immune network. In this way, G.E.M.M. balances the complex immune system, thereby enhancing the response to infection while reducing allergy and autoimmune reactions.
